Out of many one…that is our national heritage and our national identity. That concept is the bedrock of our common values. Out of all the people in the entire world, we Americans have come together from different races, religions, geographical birthplaces and have united to build on the common dream of freedom. It is a concept that is easily taken for granted in this day and age. We have many outside forces attacking and trying to rip apart the very fabric that holds these sacred beliefs together.
We are entering into one of the most contentious presidential election cycles this country has ever experienced. This is a time when the goal seems to be to separate us along a myriad of divisive lines. Each political party is vying for our affections at the cost of our national identity. We are being segmented…even by the candidates within the various parties. Are you conservative or liberal? Are you establishment or maverick? Are you a tree-hugger or right-wing evangelical? With each label, caricature and box they put us in, the wedge is driven deeper and deeper. What is the intended goal? Do the media and respective political machines think that a segmented population will actually make a stronger nation? Of course not! The goal is shortsighted: It is meant to push an agenda not strengthen a people.
At this time in our history, we must say, “Enough is enough; no more segmentation.” Our unity through our differences is our strength. Our compromise for our greater good is our legacy. The gift of national unity through our shared experiences gives us our freedom. No one can take that from us unless we freely give them that power. The drum of political expediency will continue to beat. We will be attacked on all sides to choose a side, and that side is not our side. “Out of many one” is our creed. Our differences make us stronger. Our questioning of the status quo makes us better. Our unyielding thirst for knowledge and common ground makes us a force unique and powerful in this world. So let us come together. Let us be tried by the fire and come out stronger. Let them challenge our basic patriotism and love for our country, and let us show them the true depth of our nation.
We are many. We have come together from all points of this world and many different backgrounds. We are an amalgamation of this human race but our common core is we are Americans. That belief runs deeper than any political party or any poll number can explain. Out of many…ONE. We are Americans and together we can show the world that the blessing and courage of a free people can outshine oppression and tyranny wherever it may rise up against us.
