In a time that is being heralded by some as the waning years of the American Empire, there is but one instigation that befalls us to such an unfortunate plight - our own apathy. The generations past in America were anything but apathetic. Some moderns surmise that they cared too much about everything. Well, we don’t have that problem anymore. We care about…nothing! Oh, I suppose there is a concern about global warming, human rights in Syria, an earthquake in the Caribbean to lull us out of our stupor every once in awhile, but overall we just don’t care. Iran building nukes…who cares? Islamic terrorists wanting to ignite the world…we don’t have time to care. China building up for an attempt to run the table the likes we haven’t seen since the communists “tai chi’d” Chiang Kai Shek off the continent…who can bother to care? Unfortunately by not caring, we are precipitating our own demise as the light of the “Shining City on a Hill” dims.
We sit under a federal government that largely has decided to go on an “apologize for America” spree while telling friend and foe alike that we are not a superpower for fear of the perception that the United States might have an agenda that actually differs from the likes of the Putin and Rouhanis of the world. Well we do have an agenda…it’s called freedom from tyranny.
We believe freedom is the birthright of every human being on earth, even those not strong enough to rise up for themselves. If governments want to accept the billions of dollars in aid from us each year, with it comes the caveat that we might have something to say when they oppress their people or want to hold sham elections, or their leader tries to appoint himself as permanent dictator. If they don’t like it, we will gladly keep our money and put it to work in our own country which has double digit unemployment and cities like Detroit that look more like Beirut than the thriving poster child of the supposed “Great Society.”
But alas, the issue at hand is we don’t care. Say what you want and do what you want, we already have written the checks. Condemn Michigan to be the wasteland of a new millennium because we don’t care. Have our leader apologize for us and tell the world how truly sorry we are for being…well us…the leader of the free world, the most charitable nation in the history of the world, the one that cared enough to liberate Europe, who told the Soviets to “Tear down this Wall,” who has sent billions to that island in the Caribbean.
Our heritage is that we care; we have always cared. And the only way the light of this Shining City will dim is if we put it out. China can build up whatever it wants, an insane dictator in Iran can call us the White Satan all he wants, Korean Elvis can test fire whatever rockets he wants to because when it comes down to it...we care. We may have been lulled to sleep by a monotony of political correctness and double speak, but as the “silent majority” of this great land starts to rise from its slumber, we can show the world that America still cares. We care about our Nation and what it means to be an American. We care that being an American is a birthright paid for in blood against past tyranny and the constant threat of seen and unforeseen enemies to that freedom.
So as we go about our daily routines, punch the clock on our jobs, sit in traffic on the freeway let’s care. Let’s care about who we are, what we do, what our place is, not only in this world, but in this time in history. Let us not be the generation that ushers in the demise of the greatness of America; let us be the generation that takes what it means to be an American to a whole new level. Let’s infuse our modern sensibilities with a strength of character and patriotism that will bring to this new millennium our own Spirit of ’76. Let’s not just vote “present” in our own lives and in the life of our nation; let’s stand up and show the world that yes, in fact, we care!
